TRIBE: On Homecoming and Belonging

Civilians don’t miss war. But soldiers often do.

Best-selling author Sebastian Junger has spent decades reporting from conflict zones worldwide. His embed in Afghanistan garnered him an Academy Award nomination for his documentary film Restrepo and a spot on the New York Times best-seller list for his book WAR. There is no better writer to speak to the realities of life in a combat zone, and no better man to talk to about what it feels like to come home from the front lines.

TRIBE: On Homecoming and Belonging documents the challenges that modern day veterans face when they realize that there are elements of battle that they cannot live without. Junger rejects the simplistic conceptualization of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as resulting from intense combat, arguing instead that the culprit is inherent in the modern American culture veterans were sent to defend. With more than one-in-five soldiers returning home with severe trauma from war, the stakes for our country have never been higher. Junger explores what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty, belonging, and the eternal human quest for meaning. TRIBE offers a necessary corrective and radical new way of thinking about one of the most pressing problems facing America today.

“Junger has raised one of the most provocative ideas of this campaign season—and accidentally written one of its most intriguing political books.” – The New York Times

“Thought-provoking…a gem.”  The Washington Post
