What can you expect when you attend the Morristown Festival of Books? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.
When is the festival?
Planning for the 2017 Festival is already underway! Event dates will be announced soon!
The Festival begins on a Friday evening in the fall with a Keynote Event held at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. This is a ticketed event, and tickets will be available through the MPAC box office and via our website. Tickets are also available at the door on the night of the event, as availability allows.
The main Festival happens on the next day, Saturday, and runs from mid-morning until the early evening. This year at our 2016 festival, forty authors gave in-person talks and held Q&A sessions at five venues along South Street. These sessions are free, no tickets required; general seating on a first-come, first-served basis.
You can always visit the Information Tent on the Vail Mansion lawn (use 110 South Street, Morristown 07960 for GPS) to pick up a festival program and plan your day once you arrive!
Where is the festival?
The Festival center is on the lawn in front of the historic Vail Mansion (110 South Street, Morristown). Here you will find an Information Tent, a Book Tent selling copies of our visiting authors’ books, the Signing Tent where authors will greet visitors and sign books, and concession stands selling refreshments.
Please note, the festival is not held on the Morristown Green.
Author sessions are typically held in these five venues, all within walking distance of the festival center:
- Morristown & Morris Township Free Public Library: 1 Miller Road (main entrance on South Street)
- St. Peter’s Church Sanctuary: 121 South Street
- St. Peter’s Church Parish House: 121 South Street (directly behind the main church, entrance on Miller Road)
- Presbyterian Church Parish House: 65 South Street
- Church of the Redeemer: 36 South Street
The VIP Lounge for authors and donors is at 70 South Gallery, 70 South Street.
What happens at the Festival?
On Friday evening, there is a ticketed Keynote Event held at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Attendees will enjoy a presentation by a Keynote Speaker, followed by a short Q&A session. Signed copies of his or her book will be included with all 2017 full-price ticket purchases (not including student tickets) and will be distributed upon arrival at the event.
On Saturday, the main Festival takes place from around 10am – 5pm. Authors will speak and hold Q&A sessions in five festival venues (see listing above). These author talks are free, no tickets required.
Following their talks, each author will proceed to the Vail Mansion lawn to sign books under the Book Tent.
Books will be for sale throughout the day at the Book Tent on the lawn.
Where can I find the schedule of events?
We will include all of our events, including activities for children, Keynote event information, closing event information, and more on our website. You can visit our 2016 Schedule page to see who appeared this year. A printed program will be also available at the Information Tent on the Vail Mansion lawn and at each of the festival venues on the day of the Festival.
Can I meet the authors and have my books signed?
Yes! Authors will be speaking and answering questions in very informal one-hour sessions at five festival venues throughout the day. Immediately following his or her talk, each author will proceed directly to the Author Signing Tent on the Vail Mansion lawn. You will have the opportunity to speak with your favorite authors and have your books personalized at the Signing Tent.
What is the Festival’s art poster and where can I purchase one?

What if it rains?
The festival will be held rain or shine! Author sessions are all held indoors.
Where should I park?
There are several public parking garages within easy walking distance of the Festival center (the Vail Mansion lawn) and five Festival venues. The DeHart Street Parking Garage offers 800 parking spaces and can be entered from either DeHart or Maple Streets. For directions and a comprehensive overview of parking options, click here. Where can I get lunch or other refreshments while attending the Festival?
Downtown Morristown offers a wide variety of cafés, restaurants, and takeout eateries within easy walking distance of the festival center (the Vail Mansion lawn).
Are there public bathrooms available?
Each author session is held in an indoor venue with bathrooms open for public use. There will also be portable restrooms at the Festival center on the Vail Mansion lawn.
Are there activities for children?
Absolutely! This year we are pleased to have introduced KidFest @ MFOB. Our lineup featured favorite authors such as renowned Goosebumps author R.L. Stine, Bad Kitty creator Nick Bruel, and many more! What should I wear?
The festival is a casual event. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for cool weather. It is a rain or shine event, so please bring an umbrella if the day’s weather warrants it.
